We held a party to celebrate Dr. Hayashi's doctoral degree and to welcome the new fourth-year undergraduate students. We also held a cherry blossom viewing party at night. Congratulations to Dr. Hayashi on his doctoral degree.

Miyashita (bachelor), Ueda (Master), Shimura (Master), and Tsuru (Master) gave oral presentations in 105th Spring Annual Meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan held in Osaka. Because they were able to respond well to questions and answers, I hope this opportunity will give them confidence in the future. After the graduation ceremony, we had a hectic time, so we celebrated Miyashita and Tsuru's graduation in Osaka. Congratulations on your graduation.

Professor Koen Vandewal from Hasselt University in Belgium gave a lecture at the 13th UEC Advanced Chemistry Seminar. The evolution of solar cells and photodetectors using π-conjugated molecules, their current limitations, and the reasons for them are carefully explained. It was a meaningful meeting to consider the challenges that must be taken to overcome these limitations. UEC's solar cell research laboratory also participated. Thank you to everyone who participated in this seminar.

The paper by Master's student Ueda was selected as a hot paper in the Journal of Materials Chemistry C and was featured on the cover.

Hayashi's doctoral final defense was held. 

We had a year-end party and a farewell party for Bahadur, a welcome party  for  next year's new candidates. Thank you for your hard study and work this year. 

We participated in SICC12 held in Singapore. At the universities we visited, we were able to meet students from various countries. Because the main language is English, I felt that it was easy for English speakers to live. It was certainly easy to develop human resources who can be active around the world. 

Hirata gave an oral presentation and chaired the Computational Photochemistry session at PhotoIUPAC2024 held in Valencia, Spain. I was also able to meet the current Spanish boss of Indranil-san, a PD graduate from our lab. I was able to talk with teachers and students from Europe and the US during the time after the presentation. 

Hirata participated in the 3rd Molecular Life Reaction Emergence Symposium (the 3rd Fukushima Panel Event) of the JST FOREST, hosted by OIST's JST FOREST researcher, Kabe-san. OIST was more spectacular than I had imagined, and the facilities and building structure seemed to be designed to be widely research-friendly according to foreign standards, which reminded me of the atmosphere of Georgia Tech., where I used to be. The lectures by program officers (POs) in JST FOREST Program, Dr. Goda (OIST) and Dr. Fukushima (Tokyo Tech.), were very informative and included advice on lab management that you cannot hear at a conference. 

We went camping in Mishima and Amagi in Shizuoka Prefecture to see the Amagi fireflies. We were worried whether we would be able to see them because the season for observing them seems to be getting earlier every year, but we were able to see the chemical luminescence of three or four fireflies (Genji fireflies) at night in between the rainy season rains. Through the camp, we were able to feel and share the differences in customs between Japan and India, and to improve communication, including English, among the members. 

Dr. Hirata and Hayashi gave a presentation at the Organic Photonics and Electronics session at SPIE Photonics Euro held in Strasbourg, France. I asked a lot of questions and got a lot of inspiration from the new Ph.D students I met, as well as researchers my age and seniors.

Ueda-san, Shimura-san, and Fujita-san received bachelor degree. Congratulations!

Hayashi and Dr. Hirata participated in SPIE Photonics WEST 2024 (@San Francisco) and gave a presentation on their recent research results.
